5 tips to enjoy the sea without harming it

The sea is a natural treasure that offers us countless opportunities to enjoy nature, relax, and practice water sports. However, it is essential to do so responsibly to protect the marine ecosystem and ensure that future generations can also delight in its beauty. At Club Nàutic Estartit, we promote a sustainable enjoyment of the sea. Below, we share some tips on how to respect the environment while enjoying sailing and other aquatic activities.

1. Respect marine wildlife

Marine animals are a fundamental part of the ecosystem, and it is crucial not to interfere with their habitat. Avoid feeding the fish or touching animals such as dolphins and turtles. If you practice snorkeling or diving, keep a safe distance and avoid disturbing their natural behavior. Here in l’Estartit, Costa Brava, we are recognized for our rich marine biodiversity, especially around the Medes Islands, as it is one of the most important reserves in the western Mediterranean. Among the most notable species are:

· Fish: The waters are home to groupers, barracudas, and gilthead bream. Groupers, in particular, are known for their size and curiosity, often approaching divers.

· Invertebrates: Octopuses, cuttlefish, and various crustaceans, such as lobsters and crabs, inhabit the reefs and underwater caves.

· Corals and gorgonians: The seabed is adorned with corals and gorgonians, adding color and life to the depths.

· Marine mammals: Although less common, it is possible to spot dolphins in the deeper waters around the islands.

2. Minimize your impact on the water

The use of motorized boats can cause pollution, both through emissions and spills of oil or fuel. It is advisable to inspect your boat regularly to prevent leaks and to opt for more efficient and eco-friendly engines. If you use cleaning products for your boat, choose biodegradable ones to avoid polluting the water. One of the most serious problems affecting marine ecosystems is the accumulation of plastics and other waste. Never throw trash into the sea, and if you find floating debris, collect it whenever it is safe to do so. Use reusable bags and avoid single-use plastics. Having polluted seawater is absolutely harmful for these simple reasons, among many others:

· Fish eat plastic: If we throw plastic into the sea, fish may mistake it for food. Later, when we eat seafood, we could be ingesting microplastics without realizing it.

· Less oxygen in the water: Marine pollution reduces the amount of oxygen in the water, making it difficult for fish and other animals to survive.

· Dirty and dangerous beaches: If the water is polluted, beaches become filled with trash, toxic algae, and bad odors, ruining our vacations and negatively impacting tourism.

· Dolphins and turtles trapped in nets or plastic: Abandoned bags and fishing nets can trap dolphins, turtles, and other animals, preventing them from moving or breathing.

· Contaminated water makes us sick: If the sea is polluted, the water we use for swimming, fishing, or even drinking can spread diseases.

3. Anchor responsibly

When anchoring, be mindful of Posidonia seagrass meadows, a vital ecosystem that produces oxygen and serves as a refuge for many species. Use eco-friendly mooring buoys when available, and if you must anchor, do so in sandy areas to avoid damaging underwater vegetation.

4. Respect regulations and protected areas

Many marine areas have specific regulations for their conservation. Inform yourself about local rules before navigating and respect marine reserve areas, where fishing or boating may be restricted.

5. Reduce noise and speed

Excessive noise from boats can stress marine wildlife and disrupt their behavior. Avoid excessive speed, especially near the coast and in waters where animals are present.

Respect for the sea is a shared responsibility. Share these tips with fellow boaters who might find them useful, as well as with tourists, to help spread awareness. Together, we can protect our seas, just like in the case of Club Nàutic Estartit and the Mediterranean Sea. Raising awareness is key to reducing environmental impact and ensuring that the ocean remains a place of enjoyment and biodiversity for future generations.
