History of Club Nàutic Estartit
A Journey of Passion for the Sea
Navigate Through the Club's History
Founded in 1961 in the heart of the Costa Brava, Club Nàutic Estartit emerged thanks to the vision and effort of a group of pioneers passionate about the sea. Just a year later, in 1962, the Club took a significant step forward with the construction of its first marina, designed to accommodate up to 100 boats, thus consolidating its nautical infrastructure and providing a vital space for sea enthusiasts.
In 1964, the Club further expanded its maritime offerings with the creation of the sailing section, a strategic move that propelled the training of sailors and strengthened its commitment to the promotion of competitive sailing. Since its inception, this marina has evolved to become a nautical landmark, distinguished by its commitment to excellence and innovation in the maritime field.

1970s: Growing with the wind at the back of our sails
In 1970, the Club took a significant step forward with the extension of the marina to 250 moorings, thus satisfying the growing demand from sailing enthusiasts. This development was closely followed by the start of the sailing school in 1973, opening the doors to nautical training for enthusiasts of all ages and sharing the passion for sailing with the new generations.
The consolidation of the Club’s sporting vocation came in 1978, with the celebration of the first sailing championship on the coast of l’Estartit: The Mini-Ton World Championship. In collaboration with the Reial Club Nàutic Barcelona, it was an event that marked a milestone in the Club’s history and reinforced its commitment to the sport of sailing.
1980s: Nautical Advancement and Expansion
The CNE collaborates actively with the yacht clubs of Palamós and l’Escala to create the Association of Marinas and Tourist Ports of the Costa Brava with headquarters in l’Estartit. In 1988, the CNE was considered one of the best yacht clubs in Spain and, according to some authorities, the best in Catalonia thanks to its organisation and facilities. This reputation was reinforced by the major expansion carried out in 1984, when the marina increased its capacity to 400 moorings, thus consolidating its position as a nautical reference point on the Costa Brava. Subsequently, the facilities were further extended, with new gangways and a total of 668 moorings, as well as the commissioning of a travelift for boats up to 30 tonnes, demonstrating the CNE’s ongoing commitment to improving and adapting to the needs of its members and visitors.

1990s: A New Horizon
The 1990s marked a new chapter for the Club, beginning with a significant milestone in 1992: the construction of a modern clubhouse. This new infrastructure not only symbolised the growth and evolution of the Club, but also offered state-of-the-art facilities and services for members. The commitment to the training of young sailors was consolidated during this period, promoting local talent and reinforcing the Club’s commitment to sporting development.
In addition, the commitment to environmental sustainability, always a priority, materialised in a notable way in 1998, with the awarding of the Blue Flag to the marina. This recognition not only highlighted the Club’s exemplary environmental management, but also underlined its leadership in promoting sustainable practices within the maritime community.
The 2000s: Consolidating a legacy
The marina expanded during the 2000s, making it one of the largest on the Costa Brava. In 2005, concern for the environment remained firmly at the forefront of the club’s priorities, evidenced by continued success in passing audits and renewing EMAS certification. Finally, the organisation of the Optimist Sailing World Championship in 2010 put Estartit on the nautical map, highlighting its capacity to host large-scale events and its commitment to the promotion of nautical sports.

2010s: A milestone in history
The renewal of the marina’s concession in 2014 marked the start of an ambitious three-phase transformation, which modernised and adapted the facilities to the new challenges of the 21st century. Part of this transformation included the implementation of an environmental sustainability plan for the marina in 2017, reinforcing the Club’s commitment to the environment.
The renovation works encompassed the extension of docks, the construction of new service buildings, and improvements to recreational areas and technical services, implementing measures to minimise environmental impact, improve safety and optimise energy efficiency. These strategic initiatives consolidated Club Nàutic Estartit’s position as a leading nautical benchmark on the Costa Brava, reflecting an ongoing commitment to sustainability.
2020s: Sailing into the future
Today, the Club celebrates its 60th anniversary with a firm eye on the future. Innovation and a passion for sailing continue to be the driving forces behind the Club, which continues to move forward and mark its presence in the Mediterranean.
