Catalonia Underwater Photography Championship 2024

Last weekend, on Saturday, May 25, the Catalonia Underwater Photography Championship was held at the Estartit Nautical Club, an event organized by FECDAS that brought together numerous enthusiasts of this discipline. Participants had the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and creativity in capturing the wonders of the underwater world, and the results will be announced on June 8th.

What is underwater photography?

It is a photographic specialty that combines the technical skills of photography with the necessary knowledge for underwater diving in order to capture the beauty and diversity of aquatic life.

Thanks to the implementation of the digital format, this discipline has experienced a significant increase as it has reduced equipment costs and significantly improved the quality of the images captured.

Digital cameras have transformed its practice in multiple aspects. The ability to take as many photos as the memory card allows, along with the option to view, delete, retake, and modify images on the spot, has contributed to the increase in enthusiasts in this discipline, thereby allowing more people to enjoy this ecosystem.

The crucial role of FECDAS

The Catalan Federation of Underwater Activities (FECDAS) plays a crucial role in promoting and training in underwater photography. It offers courses designed to introduce divers to this practice and provides the basic knowledge necessary to delve into this field. The courses cover everything from camera handling techniques to specific considerations of the underwater environment, allowing participants to develop their skills and enjoy this art form.

Throughout the year, FECDAS, in collaboration with its affiliated diving clubs and centers, organizes a series of trials and competitions. These events serve as preparation for larger championships and are also open to all interested individuals, offering an excellent opportunity for new photographers to familiarize themselves with the practice and meet other enthusiasts who share the same passion. In October, the Spanish Championship will take place, and in 2025, the World Championship will be held.

Such events promote underwater photography as a sport and art and foster awareness about the importance of preserving our marine ecosystems. Thanks to FECDAS and technological advancements in digital photography, more and more people can enjoy and participate in this discipline.
