VII Costa Brava Classic Sailing

From June 13th to 14th, Club Nàutic Estartit hosted the VII Vela Clàssica Costa Brava, which gathered up to 16 boats from Catalonia and France, surpassing the record of participants from previous editions.

Three days of Garbí, Gregal, and Xaloc

The competition took place over three days, all marked by moderate winds of Garbí, Gregal, and Xaloc.

On Friday, with a Garbí wind of 20 to 22 knots, the race committee proposed a 12-mile course for the Classics and Époque classes, and an 8-mile course for the Spirit of Tradition. This route included a buoy in front of Pals beach and a loop around the Medes Islands, leaving them to port, and finishing with a beat through the Freu to the finish line in front of the beach.

On Saturday, the Gregal wind, with speeds between 12 and 18 knots, allowed for a 10-mile course for all participating classes. The itinerary started towards the Freu, leaving the Medes Islands to starboard, sailing downwind to the buoy in front of Pals beach, then again leaving all the Medes Islands to starboard, and finishing in front of the beach.

After the competition, a dinner was held on Saturday evening, where participants shared experiences and anecdotes from the regatta in a very lively atmosphere.

On Sunday, the crews encountered a Xaloc wind ranging from 7 to 9 knots, which increased to 12-15 knots throughout the day. The course involved leaving the Medes Islands to port, beating to Begur to find a buoy, and then returning downwind to the beach, completing a total of 8 miles sailed.

Classifications of the VII Vela Clàssica Costa Brava

To culminate the regatta, the awards ceremony was held on Sunday afternoon at the Club’s social venue. Prizes were awarded to the top three finishers in the Classics, Époque, and Spirit of Tradition categories, as well as the podium of the Catalonia Championship, the oldest boat, and the most faithful boat, which has participated in all editions of the Vela Clàssica.

Additionally, a plaque from the regatta was given to those boats participating for the first time, including ALGOL V, ASU, MELTEMI, GUARANY, CORINA, WINDJAMMER, and MADCAP.

The final results by category are as follows:

  • Classics: 1st Sea Fever, 2nd Asu, 3rd Rob Roy.
  • Époque: 1st Islander, 2nd Stromer, 3rd Madcap.
  • Spirit of Tradition: 1st Algol V, 2nd Avelmor, 3rd Guarany.
  • Catalonia Championship Époque and Classics: 1st SEA FEVER, 2nd ASU, 3rd ISLANDER.

This year’s edition has been a great success, consolidating the regatta as a reference event for classic boats in the region.
